Dr. Harold Cohen
I really look forward to helping WVEC excel by understanding our patient needs, enhancing the talent within our team and working with our external partners to deliver an outstanding experience to the communities we serve.
Dr. Cohen was born and raised in Maryland and remembers visiting Harper’s Ferry, WV as a child. He studied biology and philosophy at Western Maryland College (now renamed McDaniel College) and graduated salutatorian of his class. He then went on to graduate from the prestigious Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, finishing in the top 20% of his graduating class.
Dr. Cohen will be providing patient care in our Charleston, Ripley, Point Pleasant and Huntington offices.
Dr. Cohen trained in Ophthalmology at the University of Iowa, which is always ranked as one of the top 5-10 programs in the country. While still a resident, He performed the first topical (no shot) cataract surgery done at the University of Iowa. Dr. Cohen lived in Indiana for 11 years before relocating to West Virginia and was the owner of Cohen Eye, based in Bloomington, IN. Dr. Cohen also brought state of the art cataract surgery to 2 rural counties in Indiana which had no Ophthalmologists. His rapidly growing practice, with the reputation for treating patients like family, added Optometry and Ophthalmic Subspecialties. Dr Cohen is also known for custom cataract surgery, adding a glaucoma procedure when needed. He has years of experience using premium lens implants (torics/multifocals) for cataract surgery. He served on the state board of the Indiana Academy of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
Dr. Cohen’s wife, Piper, and he have 3 kids. Their sons Lane (20) and Gage (18) graduated high school in back to back years. Both are now away at school. Their daughter Bryn (14) is in eighth grade. He loves being involved in his church and daughter’s school.
