January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month! Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of vision loss and blindness. It is a disease where pressure can build up and damage the eye’s optic nerve causing life-long damage to a person’s vision.
Types of glaucoma include:
• Open–angle glaucoma, which can cause peripheral vision loss.
• Angle–closure glaucoma, which interferes with the iris and inhibits the fluid in the eye from draining properly.
• Low–tension glaucoma, which can happen without elevated pressure on the eye.
There is currently no way to get the vision back that has been lost from glaucoma. As we start a new year here at West Virginia Eye Consultants, we encourage everyone to schedule an annual eye exam which is the best deterrent from glaucoma vision loss. Call us today at 304-343-3937!
